In an exciting venture twelve Air and Space Institute (ASI) students on the Military and Defence pathway embarked on a remarkable enrichment trip to Stavanger, Norway. Through the support of the Turing scheme, these aspiring aviation professionals enjoyed a fully funded trip to the renowned Sola Aviation Academy.
Ross Tarnowski, the Head of Learning and Skills for Engineering and Technology at Lincoln College and ASI, said: “Our ASI students had a fantastic trip to Stavanger in Norway where they undertook two weeks of practical aviation training. The trip provided an opportunity to gain new skills and knowledge in a different country, as well as gaining a better appreciation of the cultural and societal differences.
The Norwegian team provided a first-rate experience, and we look forward to this becoming an annual exchange opportunity and hosting students and colleagues within ASI next year.”
Elizabeth, Level 3 Military & Defence Engineering student said: “This was my first trip abroad, and it was a good introduction to what it’s like travelling. One of the tasks that I really enjoyed whilst in the hangar was on a V5FA freedom fighter where we got to conduct a hydraulic systems test. We also had enrichment days – one day we went surfing and another we hiked up a mountain – seeing a cave and frozen waterfall on the way and lunch by a lake.
Amy Garner, Level 3 Military & Defence Engineering student added: “It has been really memorable – we made some great, long-lasting friendships with the students in Norway.”
The students had the opportunity to undergo two weeks of practical aviation training while immersing themselves in a new country and experiencing its cultural and societal differences. The practical training at the esteemed Sola Aviation Academy allowed them to hone their aviation expertise and gain hands-on experience. From navigating aircraft to understanding maintenance protocols, the students were exposed to various facets of the aviation industry, broadening their perspectives and nurturing their passion for flight.
Beyond the educational aspect, the trip served as a cultural exchange, fostering an appreciation for the rich heritage and societal differences of Norway. Immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of Stavanger, the students had the chance to interact with local communities, sample traditional cuisine, and explore the breathtaking natural beauty of the region. The Norwegian team, known for their professionalism and hospitality, ensured that the students had a first-rate experience, making their time in Stavanger truly unforgettable.
The ASI Military pathway students' enriching trip to Stavanger, Norway, was an unforgettable experience that combined practical aviation training with cultural immersion. Thanks to the Turing scheme and the support of the Sola Aviation Academy, these students were able to expand their skillset, broaden their perspectives, and develop a deeper appreciation for the world of aviation. As ASI looks toward the future, the annual exchange opportunity with Norwegian students and colleagues signifies a promising collaboration that will continue to nurture the dreams and aspirations of aspiring aviators.
