There was a familiar face at the Air and Space Institute, Newark recently as Emily Evans, an apprentice helicopter pilot visited to deliver a Q&A session with current students.
More than 100 students studying a variety of disciplines including aviation, travel and tourism and more heard about Emily’s journey at the ASI.
Emily said: “I was among the first cohort of students here and realised during my time here that opportunities were very present for me to pursue a career in aviation. The name of the ASI is really carrying a lot of weight now and you really can go straight from life at ASI to working within aviation.”
After completing the Pilot & Aviation Operations Civil Pathway at the ASI in Newark, Emily is now on a Search and Rescue scholarship at Bristow.
Bristow Group is a global leader in vertical flight solutions, providing helicopter transportation and search and rescue services to civil and government organisations worldwide.
Currently based at Bristow’s training facility in Leicester, Emily has recently passed all of her ATPL examinations, which means, following completing her flying hours, she will soon be working as a search and rescue pilot.
Emily gave an account of her recent exams, as well as routes to gaining a reputation within the industry, advising students to reach out and get to know potential employers early.
She explained: “When I was 17, I applied for my apprenticeship with Bristow early, just to get my name out there. Visiting airfields, companies you are interested in and becoming known amongst the aviation community really helps you to stand out and I am convinced that is why I am where I am now.
“I originally wanted to be in the RAF as a fast jet pilot, but once they closed the door to pilots, I found there were amazing opportunities in commercial aviation. Once I had a taste of rotary aviation I loved it, the always hands on way of flying a helicopter is something I really enjoy.”
Emily also advised students on ways to apply, as well as taking questions. She then joined students in road testing the ASI's helicopter simulator.
