Three dual professional lecturers, including a Virgin Atlantic pilot, are recruited at the International Air & Space Training Institute (IASTI) in Newark, as it prepares to welcome its first intake of students in September.

IASTI Newark’s education and training is to be delivered by industry experts with years of flying & aircraft engineering experience in the air and space sector.

Jim Guthrie - Learning and Skills Lead

Leading the IASTI Newark team is Jim Guthrie, who has a significant background in further education having been a lecturer for well over a decade, as well as completing a distinguished career as a Royal Air Force engineer. His wealth of knowledge will be invaluable in driving IASTI Newark forward.

Jim says “IASTI Newark is the first major aerospace training institute for the UK. The infrastructure and the sheer scale of the project is huge. This along with the pilot and engineer pathways we’re running in year one, will help learners aspire to whatever they want to be in the future.

“Students can expect a great deal of professionalism, strong links to aviation and aerospace industries and first-class teaching during their time here.

“As they go through the programme, there will also be trips and training experiences with various companies and establishments all over the UK.”

Sam Illsley - Pilot Operations Lecturer

Joining the IASTI Newark crew as a lecturer in Pilot Operations is Sam Illsley. Sam is new to the world of further education but has a fantastic skill set having completed his qualifications and training to qualify as a commercial pilot with Virgin Atlantic. Prior to that, Sam completed an apprenticeship as an aircraft engineer and brings to the role a unique story and skill set to support the achievement of IASTI Newark students.

He says: “I’m really looking forward to working with people who want to go down a similar route to myself and bringing my recent experience within a training environment to help them.”

Sam’s tips for students starting in September are: “Enjoy it! Be prepared to work hard and know that you’re in a good position for a future career.”

Paul Routledge - Aircraft Engineering Lecturer

Also, due to come on board next month is Aircraft Engineering Lecturer, Paul Routledge. Paul has vast experience in aircraft engineering having also completed a career as an RAF Engineer and most recently as a training specialist with Northrop Grumman. His wealth of mechanical engineering knowledge will be vital in supporting students with their academic studies and providing a superb experience for them.

Ross Tarnowski - Head of Learning and Skills at IASTI Newark

Head of IASTI Newark, Ross Tarnowski, says students have an incredible opportunity to learn from the industry insight and experience of their lecturers.

To future students he says: “Our staff are highly skilled experts in their field, so don’t be afraid to ask the lecturers questions. That’s what they are here for; to help learners with their learner journey and hopefully onwards into the aviation and aerospace industry.”
