The International Air and Space Training Institute (IASTI) Newark is collaborating with the National Space Academy to develop its exciting new space programmes.

The National Space Academy (NSA) will be supporting the development of space curriculum offers, while enriching the curriculum for IASTI Newark learners.

National Space Academy

Since launching in 2008 NSA has engaged with more than 50,000 students, 6000 teachers and hundreds of industry professionals. Starting in Leicester they now deliver all over the world thanks to an amazing team of Lead Educators and Project Scientists.

As a not-for-profit organisation, they are part funded by the National Space Centre and other partners such as the UK Space Agency and ESA. Their science lab sits within the Centre itself. Altogether, this ensures their resources are relevant, inspiring and practical.

NSA engage young people with STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) using the inspirational context of space and facilitate pathways into the space sector by working with industry and education.

Director of IASTI Newark, Tom Marsden said: “We are incredibly excited to be working with the National Space Academy to develop our study programmes, so that our learners are taught the right skills and knowledge to progress into the space sector.

“We’re already breaking down the barriers to make careers in aviation more accessible to young women and men from all backgrounds through our level 3 pilot and aircraft engineering courses. We are not stopping there; we want our students and the local community to dare to dream that a career within the space industry is within their reach too.

“Through our relationship with the National Space Academy and the National Space Centre we can maximise the learning and future opportunities for IASTI Newark students, so the sky is no longer the limit for them.”

David Wilkinson, National Space Academy General Manager, commented: “The recent publication of the UK Space Strategy means that the need for space-related training and expertise is only going to grow.

"The National Space Academy is keen to work with partners to make sure that need is met, so that the country, industry and then young people themselves can all take advantage of the opportunities we will see in the next decade.”

The National Space Academy join East Midlands Airport and Inzpire as supporters of IASTI Newark, which is a collaboration between Lincoln College Group, Aviation 360Newark and Sherwood District Council and the Royal Air Force.

IASTI Newark is also one of the fantastic projects being funded by Newark's Towns Fund initiative, enabling a state-of-the-art premises to be built within the town by September 2023.

Councillor David Lloyd, Co-chair of Newark’s Towns Fund Board and Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, said: “The opportunities and pathways that being a student with IASTI Newark provides are quite literally, out of this world.

"Our young people will be given the chance to work with leading names in the aviation and space industry. There is no other destination offering this type of education and the Towns Fund Board is proud that Newark is leading the way for developing our pilots, aircraft engineers and astronauts of the future.”
