
Kevin Lloyd
Assistant Principal Air & Space Institute and Engineering
Kevin started his Engineering career in 1996 when he joined the Royal Engineers as an Apprentice Electrician. After completing his initial training as a Combat Engineer, which included a multi-disciplinary Engineering course ranging from basic construction techniques to minefield clearance and demolitions.
Once completing his electricians course, he became responsible for the installation, commission and maintenance of Electrical systems; with an early career achievement as the Electrical Team leader responsible for the Electrical Maintenance of the UK sector of the United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus.
After multiple operational deployments, a short posting to teach trainee soldiers in Combat Engineering is where he found his passion for teaching. He then further developed his pedagogy whilst teaching junior commanders and leaders for their roles in the organisations.
Kevin then become a Bomb Disposal Operator conducting UK Bomb Disposal duties and a training and mentoring role in Afghanistan for the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police Force.
On return to the UK this led to a position further developing future Bomb Disposal Operators and the training content.
The final years in his Army career he was responsible for the project and programme management training needs analysis of Military Engineers, whilst following a transition to teaching via the University of Portsmouth.
On exit from the Forces, Kevin taught GCSE and Functional Skills Mathematics and Electrical Installations before moving in the position of Curriculum Lead for Engineering Apprentices at Lincoln College Group. Mathematics and its application is his passion, with a particular focus on the fundamental application of Mathematics and the interdisciplinary connections.

Penny Taylor MBE
Head of Newark Campuses
Penny is an experienced practitioner, leader and manager with over 35 years’ experience in education.
She has a range of experience across educational pathways as well as working with a range of different age groups and students.
Penny has achieved degrees in Social Science and Criminology, Quality Assurance and Teacher Training. She has a Master’s in Education, has achieved Advanced Teacher Status and sits on the Practitioner Advisory Group for the Education and Training Foundation.
Penny was awarded an MBE in June 2023 for Services to Education, Skills and Employment in Newark and Sherwood.
Outside of College, Penny has run a Brownie group for over 25 years and sees the value of this to empower young people to gain a variety of skills, resilience and enjoyment.
She has two grandchildren who she adores and they keep her young!

Laurence Roberts
Lecturer
Laurence started working at GEC Marconi Sensors in 1994, now Leonardo, in Basildon, Essex, where he developed his career as a Senior Hardware Engineer and Electrical Design Authority.
Duties included developing electrical and electronics for thermal imaging sensors and supporting trials for the UK Army land vehicles and the US Navy F/A-18 aircraft.
During this time, he gained a 2.1 degree in Electronics and also started teaching an HNC course in the evenings at Thurrock & Basildon College, Essex. In December 2008, Laurence was given the opportunity to start teaching full-time.
Laurence can teach a wide range of engineering units, from Level 1 through to Level 6, including Electrical & Electronic Principles, Digital and Analogue Electronics, Microprocessors, Test & Measurement and PLCs, Robotics, Mechatronics and Automation.
In 2011, Laurence became a fully qualified teacher with PGCE and QTLS and in 2016 was awarded Chartered Engineer status by the UK Engineering Council.
Since 2019, Laurence has been a lecturer in Electrical & Electronics and course coordinator for HNC Electronics at Lincoln College University Centre.

Karen Murdoch
Lecturer
Travel has always been a motivator for Karen, and she truly believes that travel really does broaden the mind.
Having lived in and worked in Cyprus and Australia, Karen has also travelled extensively throughout the globe for leisure, favouring destinations such as Europe and USA.
Through her career, she has worked for key industry players such as British Airways as air cabin crew at Heathrow and Gatwick. Other careers have included passenger services agent, working as an independent travel agent, a croupier for a casino in London, customer service and training for a Telecoms company and always in people-focused roles.
Karen is an experienced travel and tourism lecturer with a wealth of knowledge and holds a MSc in Hospitality and Tourism Management.
Working within education has given her the opportunities to inspire others with her experiences of travel.
When not at work, Karen can be found planning her next cruise or travel adventure.

Gareth Bramley
Curriculum Lead - ASI
Gareth Bramley began his distinguished career in the Royal Air Force in 1987, completing basic training before advancing to RAF Cosford, where he trained as a Weapons Technician. Over his remarkable 34 years of service, Gareth worked on various fixed-wing aircraft, including the Nimrod MR II and Harrier GR7.
During service he served with RAF 5131 Bomb Disposal Squadron, Gareth trained as a Bomb Disposal Operator, developing and delivering training programs to meet the high operational tempo in the UK and overseas. He completed several tours in Iraq, undertaking roles that ranged from bomb disposal to aircraft support.
In the final six years of his RAF career, Gareth served as an instructor at RAF College Cranwell, where he prepared future officers for the next stages of their training. He concluded his military service as a Weapons Safety Specialist on the Apache E at Defence Equipment and Support.
After transitioning from the Royal Air Force, Gareth retrained in the Fire and Security industry before joining the Lincoln College Group as a Lecturer in Fire and Security.
Currently, as the Curriculum Lead at the Air and Space Institute (ASI), Gareth is passionate about enhancing the learning experience. He is committed to finding innovative ways to help students realise their full potential and thrive in the future workforce.

Gabriella Hoy
Lecturer
After growing up in the Falkland Islands, Gabriella has lived and travelled in Europe and North America travelling around the globe extensively when she can for leisure, favouring destinations such as Spain and Canada.
Through her career, she has worked with key cruise ship companies such as Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises as a main tour operator/ provider. Other careers have included tourism logistics, travel business consultant and a range of people and customer focused roles.
Gabriella has had a lifetime of experiences around the world, curating a wealth of knowledge to share. She also holds a BA (Hons) International Travel and Tourism Management.
Working in education provides Gabriella with the opportunity to inspire others with her experiences of travel.
When not at work, Gabriella can be found researching her next travel adventure or camping trip.

Ambrose Waters
Lecturer
Enlisting in the RAF in 1991, Ambrose began his career as an Aircraft Propulsion Mechanic servicing and maintaining the Tornado F3 fleet on 25 (F) SQN, RAF Leeming, and later, the C-130 Hercules platform at RAF Lyneham.
After a further training course at DCAE Cosford, he was promoted to technician level and posted to RAF Brize Norton where he developed his aircraft engineering skillset on the VC10 aircraft over the next 5 years. Promotion to Corporal and a subsequent posting to RAF Odiham saw him serving in both first line and second line engineering environments in the MESF Engine Bay followed by a short tenure on 18 (B) Sqn working on the Chinook aircraft.
After returning to RAF Brize Norton for several years to embark on a second tour employed on a VC10 squadron, Ambrose ended his engineering career in the Service at RAF Marham in 2013 where he had been working in a variety of second line environments as a SNCO.
He trained to be a school teacher when he entered the civilian sector as part of the DfE sponsored ‘Troops To Teachers’ initiative and graduated with the QTS teaching award and BA (Hons) in 2015 where he found teaching and support roles in secondary schools in Aylesbury and Lincoln before joining ASI in September 2024 as a Lecturer in Aircraft Engineering.

Alice Smith
Lecturer
After graduating from university, Alice moved to Australia where she held a number of customer-focused roles in the travel and tourism industry.
During this time she travelled extensively and visited destinations across Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
Alice joined British Airways as Cabin Crew where she flew out of London Heathrow Airport on a variety of different aircraft types.
During her time with British Airways, Alice did an internal secondment in BA’s head office holding an operational role in their Resource and Planning Department. This role broadened Alice’s understanding of airline operations and saw her working closely with BA’s Global Learning Academy.
Since moving into education, Alice has worked at a university supporting students to secure valuable industry experience and is now enjoying using her experience in travel and tourism to inspire others.

Kristian Hanslip
Lecturer
After completing his International Travel and Tourism Management course and graduating from university, Kristian started his career in Aviation.
He has held many roles, from cabin crew, through to pilot and cabin crew training and a variety of ground operations roles from Aircraft Dispatch, training, safety and standards, flight operations and management.
Kristian has travelled extensively for both work and leisure and has held roles in Cape Town, Lisbon and Rabat.
Away from his role as a Pilot and Aviation Operations Lecturer, Kristian will most likely be found out and about in the camper van on country walks with his two rescue dogs.

Steven Buckley
Lecturer
Enlisting in the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 2002, Steven began his career as a photographer. Steven’s first posting was to RAF Cottesmore working with the operations team across the station providing photographic / video support and got his first fast jet, air to air photographic sortie in the Harrier.
During his 22-year career in the RAF, Steven has travelled travel across the world in Military and Civilian aviation operational environments, flying in various platforms from transport aircraft conducting airborne trials, various helicopters to the Typhoon.
His most memorable time was being part of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows, which saw him travel in the jets to destinations as far as Malaysia and China.
His passion for aviation and flying started from an early age, he gained his Private Pilot’s licence in 2016 and has gone on to conduct aerobatic training and is now working towards his flying instructor rating.

Peter Farrington
Lecturer
Peter began his military journey in the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 2001. Over 22 years, he served at various Stations within the UK and overseas, including Cottesmore, St Mawgan, and Benson. His career took him to Akrotiri in Cyprus, Halton, Odiham, and Coningsby. He concluded his service at RAF Brize Norton.
His deployments spanned multiple regions. Peter operated in Iraq and Afghanistan, and he completed seven tours in the Falkland Islands. Each deployment tested his skills and resilience.
During his tenure as a drill instructor at Basic Recruit Training, Peter distinguished himself through dedication, leadership and was awarded station commanders and Officer Commanding 22 group commendation, as well as being on the Queens birthday honours list. His role in Operation Olympic was crucial. He led a team of 20, tirelessly feeding over 5,000 personnel around the clock during the 2012 Olympic Games. His military teaching career carried on with delivering the Level 3 training and Education/ Assessing Vocational Related Achievements to various ranks of all 3 services, including Civil Servants.
Peter had the honour of marching before HM the Queen during the presentation of new Colours to the Royal Air Force and the Royal Air Force Regiment in 2018. This moment filled him with immense pride. Additionally, he played a key role in instructing the Standard parties for RAF Odiham during the RAF 100 celebrations in London.
In 2023, Peter transitioned from the RAF to work at the Defence Academy for the United Kingdom in Shrivenham, Wiltshire. He became the Internal Quality Assurer for the Defence Trainer and Supervisor courses, (Level 3 training and Education/ Assessing Vocational Related Achievements). Before starting with ASI in early 2025.
Peter continues to keep his links with the Royal Air Force by continuing to serve as member of The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight PR team, covering several airshows throughout the season, a role he has had since 2018.

Brett Baldwin
Lecturer
Captain Brett Baldwin is an accomplished airline pilot and Training Captain with over 20,000 hours of flight time, spanning more than three decades. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Brett developed a passion for aviation early in life. After completing his flight training, he embarked on his flying career in 1989.
Brett’s journey into the skies began with his flight training in Brisbane, where he earned his Airline pilot's licence. He quickly moved into various flying roles, starting with smaller aircraft before gradually progressing to larger, more complex aircraft.
In addition to his flying experience, Brett pursued further qualifications, earning his instructor ratings. As an instructor, he played a key role in mentoring the next generation of pilots, imparting invaluable knowledge and expertise to his students.
Throughout his 32-year career, Brett has had the opportunity to fly for two major international airlines. He served with Royal Brunei Airlines, for nine years where he piloted aircraft like the Boeing 757 and Boeing 767, playing a critical role in both regional and long-haul flights. As well as Etihad Airways (10 years) which allowed him to expand his skills on modern wide-body jets, including the Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
During his time with both airlines, Brett flew to destinations across the globe, experiencing a diverse range of operational challenges and successfully navigating complex airspaces.

Amy Swanston
Lecturer
Amy has extensive experience in education and youth work alongside a passion for travel and learning.
Most recently, Amy has managed residential youth programmes for 16-18 year olds in England and been responsible for the quality assurance of experiences nationally. Prior to this, she was a Head of Year and Intervention Manager in a local secondary school. She holds qualifications in Project Management, Quality Assurance and Health and Safety.
Amy also has a lot of experience in customer service roles for large organisations, such as Lloyds Bank and Thomas Cook. She worked and lived abroad in Turkey whilst working as a resort representative.
She loves to travel and explore new places and cuisines. After graduating from university, Amy went travelling to Africa, Asia and Australia. Her latest trip was her honeymoon to Hawaii, Las Vegas and San Francisco, but she also enjoys more peaceful scenic trips across the UK with her two dogs.
Amy has recently become a mum which is seeming to be her biggest adventure yet!

Harry Grantham
Lecturer
With a distinguished 30-year career in the British Army, Harry Grantham has honed his skills as a Commissioned Officer and Late Entry Captain, demonstrating exceptional leadership and strategic management capabilities. His extensive experience as a Military Riding Master to Queen Elizabeth II and with The King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery (KTRHA) showcases his deep-rooted passion for equine excellence and ceremonial duties.
Harry has served as an Equine Training Advisor to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the London District Mounted Regiments and the Household Division, where he played a pivotal role in delivering state, ceremonial, and public duties with precision and grace. His disciplined military background, combined with over 22 years in the KTRHA and an additional 7 years in the Royal Artillery, equips him with a unique perspective on leadership and strategic management.
A proficient riding instructor, Harry possesses advanced equine skills that not only inspire students but also foster a culture of excellence. His natural ability to engage with individuals at all levels from Private Soldiers to Heads of State enables him to influence and drive policies and programs forward, all while ensuring a healthy and inclusive working environment.
Beyond his military and equine accomplishments, Harry is a proud Liveryman of The Worshipful Company of Farriers. His adventurous spirit shines through his athletic pursuits, including being an English Channel Solo Swimmer, a GBR Age Group Triathlete, and an Ironman competitor across multiple International venues. He has also made his mark as an amateur National Hunt Race Jockey and participated in the Tri-Service Show Jumping Team.
In addition to his professional and athletic endeavors, Harry volunteers as a Lifeboat Crew Member with the RNLI at Staithes and Runswick Bay, embodying his commitment to service and community. With a blend of military discipline, equine expertise, and a passion for leadership, Harry Grantham is dedicated to making a positive impact in his Lecturer for the Air & Space Institute delivering the Military and Defence Pathway incorporating Health & Fitness/ Defence Studies Lecturer for the Air & Space Institute.
