The Air and Space Institute (ASI) in Newark is collaborating with Flight Director and Air Salvage International to further enhance the learning experience of its students.

Through the new relationship with Flight Director, the ASI will be able to access commercial simulated training for their Pilot cohort learners and specialist consultancy support for future simulator provision. The partnership with Air Salvage International ensures students undertake their training alongside bespoke aircraft equipment, with expert advice.

The ASI initiative delivers education and training programmes that are co-designed by the air and space industry. Learners get hands-on experience as they develop the skills needed to become pilots, engineers or groundcrew leading to Level 3 Diplomas in Aviation Operations or Aircraft Maintenance.

Talking about the partnership Tom Swaby, Director of Flight Director, said:

“Flight Director’s professional flight simulation in Lincoln, offers trainees and qualified pilots the unique opportunity to experience realistic training and flying experiences in a Boeing 737NG-800 Flight Simulator Training Device (FSTD).

At any level, the obvious benefit of using our FSTD is safety whilst training. Tailored to individuals’ needs, our flight simulator enables trainees to maintain and further enhance their skills, knowledge and decision making during realistic scenarios. Every learner can become proficient through recurrent training, as we have the capacity to facilitate advanced tuition.

With 10 years’ experience in training, consultancy and manufacturing, our hand-picked, highly skilled and dedicated group of people make up the team within Flight Director Ltd. We are at the forefront of the aviation industry and simulator engineering solutions in Lincolnshire and continue to expand and support growth in pilot training in preparation for the future. We look forward to collaborating with the Air & Space Institute and supporting the programmes with developing the next generation of aviation professionals.”

Mark Gregory, CEO of Air Salvage International, commented:

“We have been supplying expertly cut aircraft sections (wide and narrow bodied) to colleges and training organisations for more than two decades. Our own in-house fabrication team craft these bespoke sections to satisfy the requirements of our UK and European clients.

It has been a pleasure therefore to form a new partnership with the Air and Space Institute, Newark by working closely with them to supply equipment and expert advice to support the delivery of their excellent training programmes.

The Institute’s training will take the next generation of young people to work in the UK’s aerospace and space industries, and we are proud to be part of this continuing collaboration.”

Ross Tarnowski, Head of Learning and Skills at ASI Newark is delighted to be working with the organisations. He said: “It is fantastic to have a further two high quality industry support partners working with the Air and Space Institute. I am looking forward to continuing our collaborative activities across the aviation ecosystem, which will support and benefit all students on our programmes.”

Flight Director and Air Salvage International join the Royal Air Force, East Midlands Airport, Inzpire, AAR, Leonardo, Eagle Eye Innovations, Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance and the National Space Centre as key industry supporters of ASI Newark.

The announcement comes as the ASI is set to double its intake of students for this September. The learners will spend their first year at the interim facility at Newark College - where classrooms and workshops have been developed to include industry standard equipment, including a flight simulator, engines and aircraft cabin modules - before moving to brand new headquarters set to open in September 2023.

The ASI have secured £10m from the Newark Towns Fund Board to build world class premises on the old Cattle Market site in the town. Work has already begun to clear the site, with building work due to start this summer. It is one of nine priority projects developed by Newark Towns Fund Board and is funded through the Government’s Towns Fund initiative.
