A new chapter begins for aspiring aviators as the latest cohort of students from the Air and Space Institute (ASI) and the Air and Defence College (ADC) officially matriculated at the International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) on Monday 15 September, marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

All Further Education students at ASI begin their aviation journey by matriculating at the prestigious IBCC – a symbolic and inspirational setting that reflects the ambition of the next generation of aviation and aerospace professionals.

Delivered in partnership with Stamford and Peterborough Colleges, the ASI and ADC programmes provide students with a strong foundation for careers across the fast-paced, high-tech worlds of aviation, aerospace, and defence.

The matriculation ceremony welcomed more than 140 students, lecturers, industry leaders, and representatives from key ASI partners – including leading organisations from across the UK’s defence and aerospace sectors. It was not only a formal welcome to the academic year but also a celebration of ambition, potential, and future opportunity.

Guest speaker, Deputy Commandant Group Captain Steve Harrison MSc MCGI RAFR, based at RAF Cranwell, delivered an inspiring keynote address to the next generation of aviation professionals. He highlighted the growing need for skilled, passionate individuals in the aviation sector, encouraging students to seize every opportunity and begin building their professional identity from day one.

This year’s event also introduced a new feature, team-building activities designed to break the ice, foster camaraderie, and strengthen connections among students. These collaborative exercises help develop essential interpersonal skills from the outset – skills that will prove vital during classroom learning, hands-on training, and off-site enrichment trips.

Mark Locking, Principal and CEO of the Lincoln College Group, said: “Another brilliant matriculation ceremony to mark the exciting journeys of our aspiring aviators. At ASI, we’re committed to ensuring every student begins their experience feeling supported, inspired, and connected.

“We want our students to realise their aspirations, shape their futures, and serve our communities. This is the first step towards an exciting and rewarding career in aviation, aerospace, or defence.”

Although term has now started, there’s still time to join. Applications remain open until October 2025 for courses in Pilot, Engineering, and Travel & Tourism – with places available to start immediately. Don't wait, apply now.
