Women in Engineering: ASI Students Inspire on International Women’s Day

  • Higher education

To celebrate #InternationalWomensDay 2026, we are putting a spotlight on our ASI Level 4 HNC Aeronautical Engineering students.

We spoke with two students - Teni, originally from Nigeria, and Helen from Grimsby, who balances studying with being a mum and working full-time in the industry.

Helen shared how her journey into engineering didn’t begin easily:

“I wasn't chosen for engineering when I chose my GCSE options in school, and this really knocked my confidence. It wasn't until I was 20 years old on maternity leave when I finally decided to apply for engineering-based apprenticeships. If I would be paying for childcare, I wanted it to be for a job I found fulfilling. It made me extremely apprehensive as a new mother and a woman to apply for my apprenticeship.

"However, I had no reservations about the ASI whatsoever, after realising the industry is full of knowledgeable, helpful and supportive people. After finishing my Level 3 in Aircraft Maintenance apprenticeship the HNC fits nicely around work with the course being offered part-time, one day per week ”

Teni spoke about the changing face of engineering and her ambitions for the future: “These courses do tend to have more males than females as students, but that’s definitely changing as more women are becoming more interested in engineering, are being encouraged and even excited to study STEM related courses.

"I would love a career in aeronautical engineering in the future. The college has really helped in providing resources and opportunities that have inspired me even further in that regard.”

We’re proud to celebrate students like Teni and Helen who are inspiring the next generation of women in engineering!
