From classroom to cockpit: A remarkable reunion is unfolding in the skies as a former Air & Space Institute (ASI) lecturer and his alumni student now work together in the aviation industry.

Marcel Marzec, an ASI graduate, has embarked on a successful career with regional airline Eastern Airways UK as cabin crew. In a remarkable turn of events, his former tutor, Graham Roberts, is now his Captain, with both flying high in their respective roles within the airline.

Marcel’s journey into aviation began when he enrolled in the ASI's Civil Pilot pathway programme. After graduating, he entered the aviation world with enthusiasm, choosing to start his career as cabin crew. It wasn’t long before his paths crossed again with Graham, who, as a Captain at Eastern Airways, continues to guide and mentor him—this time from the cockpit.

Reflecting on his experience, Marcel said: "During my time at ASI, Graham was my tutor who helped me throughout the college course and, when I came to Eastern Airways, he continued to support me through the training. ASI was great for giving me the foundational knowledge that I used throughout my training with Eastern Airways, including topics such as Principles of Flight, Airport Operations, and Emergency Procedures. The visits at ASI from industry leaders, team-building exercises, and enrichment trips played a crucial role in my personal progression, equipping me with the essential skills and knowledge needed to succeed as a cabin crew member with Eastern Airways."

He continued, “The comprehensive courses, hands-on experience, and professional guidance I received gave me the confidence to go into the aviation industry with the base knowledge of how airlines and airports operate, security procedures, customer service skills, and emergency procedures—key areas that are vital in the aviation industry. This confidence allowed me to transition smoothly into my role, enhancing my ability to provide exceptional service while ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers."

In his new role, Marcel receives training on the versatile Embraer EJET aircraft, which is used for both scheduled passenger services and private charters. He expressed his pride in being part of Eastern Airways, citing their commitment to a "safety-first culture, industry-leading training, and rapid expansion" as key factors in his decision to join the airline. “This combined gave me the confidence that Eastern is the best place to start and grow my career."

On the other side of the flight deck, Graham Roberts, a Captain at Eastern Airways, said: “It was truly a pleasure being Marcel’s college lecturer at ASI and now his Captain on the Embraer 190 for Eastern Airways. I have had the pleasure of watching him grow from a raw 16-year-old on his first day at college to becoming a skilled and dedicated cabin crew member."

“The foundation he received at ASI was exceptional, providing him with the knowledge and discipline that set him up for the intense, high-quality cabin crew training he underwent at Eastern Airways."

“It’s vital as a Captain to have highly trained professionals in the cabin, knowing the training he’s received at ASI and here at Eastern means that, as a crew, we can totally rely on him and his colleagues, no matter what issue is presented to us."

As someone who has seen Marcel’s growth firsthand, Graham expressed his pride in seeing his former student excel in his career. “His commitment, professionalism, and passion for aviation have been evident throughout his journey, and it’s been rewarding to see him thrive in his career.”

This reunion between former tutor and student exemplifies the value of strong mentorship and foundational training in the aviation industry. Marcel’s journey is a testament to the power of education and support, while Graham’s role as both mentor and colleague highlights the ongoing impact of dedicated educators who shape the future of aviation professionals.
