There was a great reason to celebrate this week as engineers, civil pilots and travel and tourism learners all marked the end of the academic year with an all-new graduation ceremony at Newark Town Hall.
With their military pathway contemporaries graduating at RAF Cranwell the same day, the ceremony marked a first for the ASI, rewarding learners for their hard work and also awarding three star pupils for their outstanding efforts. Cllr Lynn Roulstone, Mayor of Newark presented each prize.
Curriculum Director at ASI, Jason Pimborough, said: “This was a great opportunity to celebrate our learners this year. Everyone works so hard and to hold their achievements up is a real privilege for the ASI team and I. It was a great opportunity to recognise certain standout learners too.”
Among the winners was Connor Hubbard, who won the Quiet Tiger Aviation prize for ‘Exceptional Enthusiasm in Training’.
Connor, who has already banked flying time both in light aircraft and gliders, said: “I’d love to be a private pilot, flying around footballers and famous people. Until then I’m more than happy to do anything to spend time in the air!”
Krystian Gorowski picked up the ‘Student of the Year’ award, reflecting his success across the board this year.
Krystian, who has recently been offered a job at DEA Aviation at Gamston Airport, said: “I’m really happy to have won this award. I’m about to become an Aircraft Mechanic Apprentice at DEA Aviation, which is really exciting. It’s been a fun and engaging time at the ASI, especially the trips and the time in the simulators. I’ve had the chance to visit Ryanair and all sorts of really relevant places which all helps. I’ve always enjoyed looking at things mechanically and I’m quite hands-on so it’s been really great to get stuck in.”
As well as the graduation ceremony, two more prizes were also given out, including the Students’ Student Award, voted for by fellow learners and presented to Robert Bedells and the ‘In The Pursuit of Excellence’ award, which went to Olivia Sayers.
Olivia, who works at a travel agent, said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at ASI, at times it’s been hard but it’s given me lots of experiences. I originally wanted to be cabin crew, but I’ve since landed a job at Co-Op Travel which I’m really excited about.”
