Students studying for their Travel & Tourism; Aviation qualifications were given career advice and an insight into commercial airline life at the Air & Space Institute in Newark this week.

A visit from Jet2 Pilot, First Officer Jake Watson gave the students first-hand experience of how to approach a career in international airline travel and the routes available into the trade.

Jake, originally from Lincolnshire, now flies out of Newcastle on a regular basis, flying commercial flights across the world following training and development with Jet2.

He explained to learners that there were several routes in and underlined the importance that commercial airlines like Jet2 placed on knowing the whole industry inside out, from the duties of cabin crew, to the innate knowledge that a pilot requires to progress.

Commercial airlines have two distinct paths into employment, either an integrated training programme that consists of a full-time course or via modular means in a more cost-effective way.

Jake said: “These days the industry is thriving so the difference between how you attain your qualifications doesn’t matter so much, however the knowledge and breadth of experience is what is needed.

“The Jet2 Future Officers Programme is a great way to learn and grow into a career within aviation and the further you progress, the better the opportunities that are available.”

Jake answered many questions from learners, including concerns about funding, the lifestyle of a pilot and subjects being studied at college.

Head of  Newark Campuses, Penny Taylor MBE, said: “It was great to welcome Jake to the ASI Newark, his insights into the industry for our learners was truly of value. The emphasis that a good knowledge of the whole industry and ways learners can prepare for a successful career was really useful. Jake had plenty of questions and our learners were fielding a lot of queries after the speech, which is really encouraging.”

Jake finished his visit with a tour of the ASI Newark, including taking a student for a short flight on one of the ASI’s flight simulators.
