Moon Landing Memento Gifted to the ASI Newark

  • Education

An engineer and local resident has very kindly gifted a commemorative and important memento to the Air & Space Institute in Newark.

Dr Lewis Lack, a lifelong engineer, decided to donate a photo montage of the Apollo mission to the College after he received it from his Auntie who bequeathed it to him on her passing.

Dr Lack, said: “I was given this art work by my Aunt Mairi who was a pediatric doctor and she knew I studied Engineering and had a keen interest in all things engineering.

“She knew I was also very interested in Aerospace having watched the moon landings in the 1960's as a young lad and been inspired by them. I also visited the US aerospace museum in Huntsville, Alabama in the 1990s when I was working in the USA and was very impressed by the exhibits.

“I trained in fatigue and durability, having gained a doctorate in 1986 from Reading University on Wind Turbine design, and worked for a software company for many years who are global experts in fatigue design tools.

“In 2006 I decided to become self employed and won a contract with GKN Aerospace in Weston-super-Mare as structural integrity expert on the A400M development team - not quite aerospace but an exciting aircraft development.”

“Obviously as I am based in the East Midlands I have visited the National Space Centre in Leicester and my interest was piqued when the Newark College/ASI opened. I am still working on structural integrity and materials engineering matters as a senior consultant and have been involved in many engineering structures, mostly earthbound ones!”

Head of Newark Campuses, Penny Taylor, said: “We are incredibly grateful to Dr Lack for his donation, we’re very keen to give some context to the knowledge that we teach here and what better achievement than the moon landing?”
