Second-year Military & Defence Pilot students on the Level 3 programme were given an invaluable opportunity this week as they met with a group of recently graduated RAF Cranwell officers.
The visit provided an inspiring insight into the future that awaits them, with all the officers recently streamed onto the aircraft on which they will begin their RAF careers, after proudly earning their wings.
The event took place over two informative sessions, during which Flight Lieutenants Anna Shackleton, Tom Redpath, Emily Russell, Greg Harris, Charlie Scott, Thomas Hannan and Adam Currie shared their personal journeys into the RAF. They offered candid reflections on their training, their experiences so far, and what new recruits can expect in their upcoming roles.
This ongoing partnership with the Royal Air Force’s Flying Training School (FTS) continues to strengthen the pathway between college and military aviation careers. With many students preparing to submit their applications after the half-term break, the timing was ideal for them to gain first-hand advice and insider knowledge from those who have recently walked the same path.
Guest speakers highlighted the importance of camaraderie, teamwork and effective leadership, as well as how to manage stress and maintain a healthy work–life balance. They spoke about being supported in their passions outside of flying, working with performance coaches, and being invested in as individuals. The officers also described the enriching opportunities available during the hold periods between training courses.
Students were particularly interested in the insights shared about the selection process and application tips – including the importance of being aware of current affairs, understanding NATO operations, and having knowledge of military ranks across all three services, not just within the RAF. They asked excellent questions to deepen their understanding of life in the military and how best to prepare for the challenges ahead.
In addition to the talks, guests were given a guided tour of the college’s facilities, including the on-site Airbus training environment, led by two students, Daniel Williams and Stanley Bradley. This gave the RAF visitors a chance to see first-hand the professional setting in which students are developing their aviation skills.
Daniel Williams, a Level 3 Military & Defence Pilot student, said: “It’s a real honour and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent ASI College and showcase to the RAF everything we do here.
“The facilities we have are incredible – from the simulators and the Airbus A320 to the engineering workshops – and they really help us develop the skills we need to progress towards becoming pilots and engineers.
“Hearing first-hand from the RAF pilots today about their own journeys and how they’ve prepared for flight training has been amazing; it’s exactly the kind of insight that inspires all of us to keep pushing towards our aviation goals.”
The key message shared throughout the visit was that aviation is not a linear path – there are many routes available for aspiring aviators, particularly within the RAF.
