Students from the Level 4 HNC Aeronautical Engineering for England course had a unique opportunity as they visited RAF Coningsby, home to the Typhoon Maintenance Facility and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
The group was given a private guided tour of the aircraft, gaining an up-close look at some of the Royal Air Force’s most iconic and technologically advanced planes. The visit was made even more special as four students currently work with BAE Systems on the base, allowing for an insider’s perspective on aircraft maintenance and operations.
The tour provided valuable insights into both historic and modern aviation engineering, from the legendary Spitfires and Hurricanes of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to the cutting-edge Typhoon fighter jets.
Students described the visit as both educational and inspiring, offering them a real-world connection to their studies and future careers in aeronautical engineering.
Laurence Roberts, Aeronautical Engineering Lecturer at ASI, said: "This visit to RAF Coningsby was an incredible opportunity for our students to see aeronautical engineering in action, from historic aircraft preservation to cutting-edge fighter jet maintenance. Taking part in these trips help inspire the students to see how we put theory into practice."
RAF Coningsby plays a crucial role in UK air defence and is home to frontline Typhoon squadrons, as well as the historic aircraft that form a living tribute to the RAF’s rich heritage.
The visit reinforced the importance of engineering excellence in maintaining both modern and historic aircraft, leaving students with a greater appreciation for the skills required in the industry.
