Learners from Newark’s Air and Space Institute (ASI) are to get relevant on-the-job training at the region's biggest airport.
After impressing officials at East Midlands Airport (EMA) during a recent excursion, seven ASI students have secured holiday jobs there, where they will get to learn the ins and outs of airport operations.
George Annakin, Krystian Skrzypczak and Nathan Banyard are among the students to have been offered work. They hope the new role will boost their long-term prospects, by giving them first-hand knowledge of the skills and behaviors required by the aviation sector.
“We had a tour of the airport, we got involved in a few different exercises and took part in an interview where they asked us how we would react in certain scenarios,” said Nathan about the day.
“They’ve offered us work experience, which could lead on to further opportunities at EMA. We’ll be helping in various roles around the airport, including airport security, and filling in the gaps where they need us.”
Krystian is keen to make the most of the experience. He says: “We’re hoping to make a lot of contacts and to get to know more about what goes on in the environment we eventually want to work in.”
“We could be starting as soon as the Easter holidays but certainly over the summer, so it’s really exciting.” adds George.
This incredible opportunity for ASI students is part of a range of enrichment activities involving EMA. The Institute has also recently welcomed several guest speakers from the organisation, including Managing Director Clare James, to share industry insight with learners.
EMA is a key industry supporter of ASI Newark, along with the RAF, Inzpire, AAR, Leonardo, Eagle Eye Innovations, Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance and the National Space Centre. For the first time education and training programmes are co-designed by the air and space industry using the job roles as the blueprint for the qualifications.
The ASI is also one of nine priority projects developed by Newark Towns Fund Board and is funded through the Government’s Towns Fund initiative.
